Ukrainian-Canadian dramatic soprano Antonina Ermolenko is fast gaining international acclaim for her “diva’s vocal technique and dramatic flair” (Promin), along with her sense of “lyricism and emotional depth” (New Pathway). A disciple of Martina Arroyo, Antonina’s musical approach hearkens back to the Golden Age of opera, while infusing her own unique, character-driven approach to the art form.
Her wide range of repertoire includes dramatic coloratura roles such as Bellini’s Norma, Donizetti’s Anna Bolena, and Mozart’s Mme. Herz alongside heroines such as Puccini’s Tosca, Verdi’s Lady Macbeth, Wagner’s Sieglinde, and Beethoven’s Leonore. She has performed around the world, in venues such as the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, the Danny Kaye Playhouse in New York, and the historical Ekhof Theater Gotha. She has sung with orchestras such as Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Thüringen Philharmonie, Orchestra of the National Theater of Constanţa, and the Johann Strauss Orchester Wiesbaden.
Antonina’s 2023/24 operatic season is filled with a mix of opera and concert. Operatic roles will include Leonora in Verdi’s Il Trovatore, the fascinating Emilia Marty in Janáček’s Věc Makropulos, and Giorgetta in Puccini’s Il Tabarro. Ms. Ermolenko is excited to be a part of the Canadian Festival of Czech Opera, as well as the Sugeen Opera Festival. She is equally looking forward to touring a thrilling program of newly discovered songs by Reinhold Glière, along with other exceptional Ukrainian composers.
Highlights from previous seasons include Ms. Ermolenko performing Mussorgsky's Songs and Dances of Death with members of the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the New Opera Lyra Ottawa, as well as singing at the International Midsummer Festival of Tagliacozzo, the Teatro Goldoni (Livorno), Dnipropetrovsk Opera Theatre, Opéra de Québec, as well as Freiburg’s Die Schönen Musiktheater.
Antonina received her Bachelor’s Degree in Vocal Performance from the prestigious Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada, and her Master’s Degree in the same from Hunter College, CUNY, in New York. She spent her first year out of college as a Resident Artist with Michael Capasso’s Dicapo Opera Theatre in New York.
Antonina has had extensive training in classical ballet and character dance and was a member of the Desna Ukrainian Dance Company of Toronto (2000 - 2007). Ms. Ermolenko studied the dramatic arts at the Equity Showcase Theatre (Toronto), where she completed their Player’s Academy.
